Standing Cedars Community Land Conservancy owns about 1700 acres of private land.

Four parcels are open to the public for hiking, nature experiences, crosscountry skiing & snowshoeing (Engelwood, Buffalo Skull, Tewksbury & Brown). See “Land in Conservancy” tab for information, map and parking lot addresses.

What is the largest parcel Open to the Public?

The Engelwood unit is the largest parcel with about 1200 ecologically-diverse acres.

What hours is Standing Cedars land open?

Sunrise to sunset.

Are there trail maps along the trail?

There are no trail maps along the trails. There are property/trail maps at the kiosks, and on the website.

Do you have any groomed xc ski trails?

When there is enough snow, a track is groomed at Engelwood. In winter share the trail – don’t walk on set ski tracks. Skiers and snowshoers can use groomed or ungroomed trails.

Do dogs have to be leashed? 

Dogs must be on leash from April 15- July 31, per WI DNR policy, for protection of all nesting birds and animals. Dogs should always be under control and near their human companion.

Are bikes, horses or motorized vehicles allowed on the trails?

No. Foot traffic only

Is camping allowed?

No

Is hunting allowed?

Hunting is allowed by Standing Cedars permit only, for volunteers who have met the yearly requirements. See “Volunteering & Hunting” section for more information.

Is hiking allowed during hunting season?

No hiking is advised during WI Deer Gun Seasons. During the other hunting seasons, starting in mid September, hikers and their dogs are advised to wear blaze orange. 

Can I carry a weapon or firearm on SC property?

No, with the exception for those volunteers that have hunting privileges. 

Can I use a metal detector on SC property?

Recreational metal detecting is not allowed. 

Can I collect plants, seeds, rocks, firewood, etc.?

The collection of non-huntable animals, plants (including parts such as seeds, roots, boughs, flowers, etc.), fungi, rocks, minerals, fossils, archaeological artifacts, soil, downed wood or any other natural material, alive or dead, is prohibited without permission.

Is foraging Allowed?

Edible fruits, edible nuts, wild mushrooms, wild asparagus and watercress may be harvested by hand only for personal consumption by the collector. 

Does Standing Cedars offer any volunteer opportunities?

Yes, we have workdays on the third Saturday of each month, from 9am to noon. Email us your name and email address if you would like to be added to our volunteer email list.
